Somebody Moved the Walls

Approximately 3 minutes

There comes a point during every renovation when someone looks at the blueprint, scratches their head, and asks a perfectly reasonable question.

“Are we absolutely certain the wall used to be there?”

Management has reached that point.

The original plan seemed straightforward enough.

Replace the signs.

Paint the walls.

Move in the music.

Invite the stories.

Turn on the lights.

Simple.

Then somebody discovered another hallway.

The hallway led to a room.

The room contained more rooms.

Several of those rooms appeared to have been built sometime around 2008 and had apparently been collecting ideas ever since.

No one is entirely certain how large Dark Val is becoming.

This was originally supposed to be an entertainment website.

Now it appears to be growing into an entertainment district.

Music has claimed one wing.

Fiction has started moving furniture into another.

The vampires continue to insist that they have always lived here.

Management has decided not to argue with them.

The dance floor remains under construction, but people are already wandering through to see what is happening.

That seems appropriate.

Nightclubs are curious places.

Some people come to dance.

Some come to listen.

Some simply want a quiet table where they can watch everyone else tell stories without realizing they’re doing it.

Dark Val should have room for all of them.

Every week another piece falls into place.

Sometimes it’s a song.

Sometimes it’s a story.

Sometimes it’s an idea that refuses to leave after arriving by accident.

Management has learned not to underestimate accidents.

Several of our best ideas began as mistakes.

Others arrived disguised as bad dictation.

A few simply walked through the front door one evening and announced they intended to stay.

We’ve stopped asking too many questions.

There is still plenty to do.

The walls need attention.

The lighting needs adjustment.

The menus are still negotiating with reality.

WordPress continues to have opinions.

Fortunately, Dark Val has opinions too.

We’ll keep opening rooms as they’re ready.

We’ll keep adding music.

We’ll keep collecting stories.

And one day, someone new will walk through the front door and assume it always looked this way.

Management will smile, quietly remember the exposed wiring, the misplaced buttons, and the weeks spent searching for the right theme, and simply say…

“Welcome.”

Welcome to Dark Val.

Where the Night Comes Alive.
