The Building Is Developing Opinions

August 19, 2026
Approximately 3–4 minutes

Last Wednesday, Management reported that somebody had apparently moved the walls.

This week, the building has taken the next logical step.

It has begun expressing opinions.

This was not part of the original business plan.

There are now mornings when Management opens the front door expecting to accomplish one simple task, only to discover the building has other ideas.

A menu wants to live somewhere else.

A photograph insists on being larger.

A story refuses to stay in the category where it was originally filed.

The music keeps asking for another speaker.

WordPress, meanwhile, has developed several opinions of its own.

Management has chosen to describe these as “creative differences.”

Negotiations continue.

Dark Val was supposed to be a website.

Somewhere along the way, it became a place.

That is a curious thing about places.

Eventually they stop belonging entirely to the people who built them.

Readers arrive.

Writers move in.

Musicians begin rehearsing.

Characters refuse to leave.

Before long, everyone starts rearranging the furniture.

Management has accepted this as a sign that the renovation is succeeding.

After all, empty buildings never argue with anyone.

Only living ones do.

There are still plenty of unfinished corners.

Fresh paint.

Temporary signs.

Boxes that nobody remembers packing.

A suspicious number of extension cords.

And at least one light switch that appears to control absolutely nothing.

We’re leaving it alone.

Experience suggests it probably does something important.

Dark Val was never intended to become a museum.

It was always meant to be a living place.

A place where stories arrive.

Where music echoes through old hallways.

Where strange ideas are welcomed instead of questioned.

Where mistakes occasionally become permanent landmarks.

Perhaps that is why the building keeps changing.

It isn’t trying to become perfect.

It is trying to become itself.

Management considers that a worthwhile goal.

If you stop by next week, something will almost certainly have changed.

A new story.

A different song.

Another room.

Perhaps even a working menu.

One can dream.

Until then, the lights remain on, the doors remain open, and the band is still warming up.

Welcome to Dark Val.
