Does It Bounce?

As a cavalry officer in the grand times of the late 1880s, I have seen many, too many, battlefields and the aftermath of gunfire. What happens when a .22 round hits a body? Does it bounce around, or does it penetrate through a straight path, stopping once it strikes a vital organ or bone?
